Steps to km converter
About 1,400 steps make 1 km at an average 0.7 m stride — 10,000 steps are roughly 7 km. It gets more precise with your height:
Stride = height × 0.415 (walking). Override the field if you've measured your real stride.

Is 10,000 steps a day the magic number?
Not really — the figure originated in a 1960s Japanese marketing campaign. Research shows clear health benefits from 7,000–8,000 daily steps (≈ 5–6 km), with flattening returns above that; for older adults, 6,000 is already a solid target.
Calories: walking burns roughly 0.04–0.05 kcal per step — 10,000 steps ≈ 350–500 kcal depending on weight and pace, or about 50–65 kcal per kilometre.
Three ways to measure your stride length
Formula (fast): height × 0.415 for walking — ±5–7 cm accuracy. Counted distance (better): walk a known 100 m, count steps, divide — ±2 cm. GPS calibration (best): record a 2–3 km outdoor walk and divide the GPS distance by your tracker's step count; it captures your real gait automatically.
Enter the measured value in the calculator above — and in your tracker app, which uses the same stride assumption for its distance figure.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in 1 km?
At an average stride of 0.7 m, about 1,400 steps per kilometre. Shorter people need up to ~1,600, taller people as few as ~1,250.
How many km is 10,000 steps?
About 7 km with a 0.7 m stride — the realistic range is 6–8 km depending on height. The calculator uses your individual stride length.
How do I measure my stride length?
Rule of thumb: height in cm × 0.415 for walking (~73 cm at 175 cm tall). More precisely: walk a known distance (e.g. 100 m), count your steps, and divide distance by steps.
How long does 10,000 steps take?
At a normal walking speed (~5 km/h with a 0.7 m stride), about 1 hour 25 minutes. Brisk walking (6 km/h) gets it done in roughly 1 hour 10 minutes.
