Five ways to cut fuel cost
- Slow down: 120 km/h instead of 160 saves 2–3 l/100 km — over €20 on a 500 km leg.
- Avoid motorway stations: they charge €0.15–0.25/l more than town stations one exit away.
- Check tyre pressure: 0.5 bar too low costs ~5 % extra fuel.
- Drop roof boxes and ballast: a roof box adds 1–2 l/100 km at motorway speed.
- Share the ride: four people cut the per-person cost to a quarter — the calculator shows the split.

Holiday drive: 850 km, diesel at 6.2 l/100 km and €1.64/l → 52.7 l =€86.43 one way — doable without a fuel stop on a 70 l tank.
Shared ride: 640 km round trip, 8.5 l/100 km, €1.78/l, 3 people → €96.83 total = €32.28 each.

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
Fuel cost = distance in km × consumption per 100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. For 400 km at 7 l/100 km and €1.75/l: 400 × 0.07 × 1.75 = €49.00.
How do I convert MPG to litres per 100 km?
Divide 282.5 by the imperial MPG figure (or 235.2 for US MPG). 40 mpg (UK) ≈ 7.1 l/100 km; 30 mpg (US) ≈ 7.8 l/100 km. Then use the calculator with the metric value.
How much fuel does 100 km cost?
At €1.75/l: an economical car (5 l/100 km) about €8.75, an average car (7 l) about €12.25, an SUV (9 l) about €15.75.
How do I find my car's real consumption?
Fill the tank, reset the trip counter, fill again after a few hundred km: litres ÷ km × 100. Trip computers typically flatter by 0.5–1 l/100 km, and official WLTP figures are 10–20 % below real-world use.
How far does a full tank go?
Tank size ÷ consumption × 100. A 50-litre tank at 7 l/100 km covers about 714 km; at 9 l/100 km only 555 km.
